History of Civil Engineering
Civil engineering first showed its presence in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia when humans started building places they could call homes. Other civil engineering products from the ancient times were like Qanat water management system, the Great Wall of China, the stupas in Sri Lanka, and not forgetting the amazing dams, roads and bridges built in Ancient Rome.
John Smeaton was the pioneering civil engineer who built the Eddystone Lighthouse. Together with his comrades, they founded the first Society of Civil Engineers. In 1828, civil engineering was officially acknowledged as profession by the Institution of Civil Engineers in London.
Norwich University in the USA was the first educational institution to provide civil engineering courses. Rensselaer Polytechnic became the first institution that granted a degree in civil engineering.
